Reading the Jyutping

  • Letters: roughly English - j is like y in yes, c like ts, z like ds, and the final letter of a syllable is often swallowed.
  • Tones: the number at the end runs from 1 (highest) to 6 (lowest). m4, ng5 and similar have no vowel at all.
  • Practice: say each word out loud, then hear it played back by a native speaker in the app.

This page is the website starter list and grows with the app; the full word list, with audio, lives inside CantoBuddy.

Practise these words with sound

CantoBuddy plays every word from a native-speaker recording, on a timer you set, in a window that stays on top of your work - using the same word list you are looking at here.
